They are great at killing oral bacteria, reducing plaque accumulation, freshening the breath, helping to clean between the teeth and at helping to remineralise the teeth. Tasting pleasantly of olives, with hints liquorice and slightly bitter earthy flavours, these sticks posses broad antimicrobial qualities essential for great natural oral care. Our sticks are sent to you in totally biodegradable and compostable packaging, giving you a fully effective, sustainable and chemical free way of caring for your teeth. Olive Tree Toothbrush Sticks (Olea europaea) also known as Black Olive Miswak, Zaytoon, Zaitoon, Aswad Miswak, as well as I am sure many other names.
Benefits of Using Black Olive Miswak
Our Olive Tree Sticks or black miswak are rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, tannins, terpenoids, amino acids and saponins and these may account for their antimicrobial activity.
Antimicrobial
Olive Tree Sticks are especially antimicrobial against bacterial species such as S. mutans and S. salivarius. Their activity against a range of other oral pathogens: such as S. aureus, S. sanguinis, S. sobrinus, L. acidophilus and especially C. albicans is remarkable too.
On using the sticks, antimicrobial substances that naturally protect plants against various invading microorganisms or other parasites leach out into the oral cavity, protecting users against cariogenic and periodontopathic bacteria.
The olive stick leaves a trace on the teeth and tissues of the mouth which contain significantly plaque inhibiting properties. This means that the teeth stay cleaner between meals with less furring of the teeth.
Freshens Breath
For the same reasons, using olive sticks help to keep the breath fresh.
Natural Cleaning Qualities
Olive stick toothbrushes contain natural plant based detergents (saponins) which help lift dirt of the teeth and reduce staining.
Due to the high levels of silica in the fibres of the wood, the olive tree sticks have just the right abrasive qualities to clean the teeth thoroughly.
Anti Inflammatory
Many of the phyto-chemicals (chemicals grown by the plant itself) have anti-inflammatory qualities which helps the gums and tissues of the mouth to stay healthy and feel comfortable.
Enhances Salivation
With the astringent flavour, using stick toothbrushes also encourages salivation and enhances your own body's way to fight caries.
Mineralisation
Miswak provides nutrients for bone, tooth and gum development. Native toothbrush stick users have strong bone development and claim to have fewer dental and orthodontic problems.
Remineralisation of the Teeth
While brushing the teeth with the olive sticks the dental enamel remineralises after a few minutes, giving the dental enamel more integrity and protecting the teeth between brushing.
Reduces Tooth Sensitivity
Due the the remineralising properties of olive tree sticks and miswak, the teeth become less sensitive!
The Differences Between Black Olive Sticks and Miswak
Olive Tree Sticks (olea europaea) compare well to Miswak (Salvadora persica) roots, but the Olive Sticks are much milder in taste, with a negligible olive-earthy aroma. The Olive Sticks are slightly shorter, softer when wet and thinner in diameter. The thin diameter means that by tilting the stick, it is relatively easy to reach to back surface of the rear molars. By contrast, the Miswak sticks are very fresh, sappy, pungent and volatile with their strong mustard-horseradish aroma, longer and thicker. If you are sensitive to strong tastes and aromas then please choose the Olive Tree Sticks!
Using Olive Sticks
Just place a stick in you mouth and rub it against the teeth - you will hear and feel plaque and tartar being scraped off. After a few goes the bristles will form - use it like a conventional toothbrush being sure to reach behind the back molars. Only use the stick on the gums once the bristles are soft. Once the bristles get too long, just trim them with scissors and carry on. Wash the stick if you can after use and wrap in paper, a handkerchief or napkin to keep it clean and make it easy to carry around.
