Chestnut and Marshmallow 2-in-1 Laundry Granules
As a company one of our proudest achievements has been to create our chestnut and marshmallow 2-in-1 laundry product. We started with Chestnuts gathered by smallholders and agricultural labourers from the Waveney Valley the river border between Norfolk and Suffolk. After two years trying to find a practical milling process, we finally hit upon a solution and were able to make our finished product.
The main part of the laundry product are the wild gathered chestnuts which are a natural, biodegradable 'tree-based' detergent. We have combined this with marshmallow root, because the mucilageous gel in the marshmallow, also helps to lift dirt away from fabrics to give the 2-in-1, dual cleaning power. Most of all, the marshmallow imparts a wonderful softeness to the textiles and a light natural, fragrance.
How to use Chestnut and Marshmallow 2-in-1
The granules can be used in a washing machine, but they will always need containing in a sock. A normal drawstring bag isn't suitable. We use an odd long sock to contain the granules.
How to get the granules in the sock
Put your hand on the foot of the sock.
Grab 2 tablespoons of Chestnut and Marshmallow 2-in-1
Pull the knee end of the sock away from you and hey presto, the granules will be safely contained in the tow of the sock.
Now double knot the knee on of the sock.
How to Use the Chestnut and Marshmallow 2-in-1
Placed the knotted sock in the base of the washing machine drum.
Add the clothing.
Add your laundry whitener if you are using it (see next section)
Select your normal wash program.
The 'wash sock' can be used for multiple wash loads. Either use the wash sock contiguously, or hang the sock to dry with the laundry ready for next time.
How Can You Tell When the Wash Sock is Exhausted?
After each wash, smell the sock. If it still has a chestnut-marshmallow aroma, it can be reused. If the wash sock is dried with the laundry, you can still assess it in the dry state. If it still has a marshmallow aroma when dry, it still has more washing and conditioning power. Carry on using it. I tend to get four washes per 2 tablespoon dose.
Blue Indigo as Laundry Whitener / Optical Brightener
Our indigo is made from the leaves of the indigo plant. By fermenting it using traditional processes on goat and camel urine, it gives a chemical free, pure, odourless blue powder which is safe for continuous dermal contact.
Helps to make whites look whiter and dark clothes to look darker.
Leaves an anti-microbial film on clothing and bedding, helping clothing and bedding to stay fresher for longer.
How to Prepare the Blue Indigo Laundry Whitener
Add 5g of blue indigo to 5 litres of water - an old vinegar container is idea. You can also work on a smaller scale, with 1g of blue indigo to 1 litre of water. The indigo keeps well and you do not need to add preservatives. Put the lid on the container and shale well.
Indigo doesn't actually dissolve in water, so you will need to remember to shake your indigo canister before each use so that the indigo is distributed in the solution.
How to Use The Blue Indigo Laundry Whitener
Add to the conditioner tray of your washing machine (often the middle compartment). Start by adding enough to reach the fill marker - about 100ml.
Large beech Wood Pegs
Produced in Germany from FSC certified beechwood, our pegs are slightly larger than most wooden pegs with heavy duty galvanised steel springs.
Their strong springs, help to secure heavy and tick items such as thick socks, towels and sheets, even in windy conditions.
To keep the pegs looking their best, please don't leave them out in the rain.
Why Switch to Plant Based Laundry Products?
Most conventional laundry products and fabric conditioners contain a cocktail of chemicals which cause untold environmental harm especially to our rivers. Often containing ingredients made from petro-chemicals, bleaches, dyes, forever-chemicals such as stilbenes (which don't break down and cause harm to all types of living organisms). Conventional detergents are high in phosphates and they cause algal blooms on rivers, suffocating the life within.
When people use these chemical detergents in their homes, they create a toxic atmosphere of poisonous neurotoxin fragrances. These can have immediate health effects with respiratory problems such as asthma and allergies and over time contribute to chronic disease.
Conventional detergents and conditioners, leave a residue of volatile chemicals on the clothing. Most of us are in contact with clothing and bedding almost every hour of the day and these chemicals are entering our skin and circulation. Now more people have developed skin issues such as eczema, dermatitis, dry skin conditions etc.
What really sets off my alarm bells is that the manufacturers of artificial detergents and fabric conditioners don't tell you what ingredients they use. I am sure they wouldn't want you to google the ingredients and found out just how dangerous and polluting they are.
I have more issues with the chemical detergent industry which produce so much plastic waste. Let us stop giving these polluters our support!
Summary
