Product Description:

Handmade wooden spoons for mixing clay or for preparing and eating food. Ideal for reenactors, bushcraft, camping and home use.

An exquisite handmade wooden spoon made from the orange tree. These elegant wooden spoons are ideal for mixing rhassoul or green clay, as unlike metals, they preserve the natural energy of the clay. They are also suitable for food preparation and eating. There are three types of spoon available a teaspoon, an eating spoon or a mixing / serving spoon.

Each spoon is unique and exquisitely formed by an elderly master wood worker in Marrakesh. Starting with the fresh branch of orange wood, the maker uses a chisel to define the form, symmetry and proportion and then a curved blade to scoop out the eye-shaped bowl of the spoon. You can see the rippled surface, the tool marks, in the bowl of the spoon. The slender handle is delicately shaped with a rasp, file and then plane before the spoon is polished with sandpaper.  Each spoon is completely made and finished by hand.

The wood is yellow, and turns a deeper colour when oiled. No varnish or chemicals are used on these spoons. Orange wood is valued for its light colour, fine grain and for the delicious but subtle aroma of orange flowers.

Spoon type Length (cm) Bowl Width (cm) Bowl Depth (cm)
Tiny spoon 12-15 2.5 1

How to care for your handmade wooden spoon

  • Oil the spoon before use if desired. Use any edible oil.
  • Oil the spoon periodically using an edible plant oil to reduce water penetration.
  • Wash the spoon by hand straight after use with warm water and mild plant based detergent (such as soapnuts) and dry the spoon afterwards.
  • If water does penetrate the wood and causes the grain to lift, allow the spoon to dry out completely, sand with fine sandpaper until smooth and re-oil. Allow time for the oil to soak into the wood before using the spoon again.
  • The spoons can be used in food preparation and eating, far preferable to plastic.
  • Young children and babies should always be strictly supervised when using a wooden spoon. A spoon is not a toy! When not in use keep away from children and pets.

Ethics of Using Wooden Spoons

  • Supporting traditional wood skills, originating in the Ice Age.
  • No trees are destroyed in this process of making these spoons – the wood is from branches pruned after the orange harvest to assure the healthy regeneration and fruiting of the tree. The wood for these spoons is completely renewable as it is a by-product from the cultivation of oranges.
  • Reduces reliance on the extraction of metals from the earth.
  • The spoons are made in a small workshop with two craftsmen. A middle aged craftsman makes the large furniture items and prepares orange tree blocks for the elderly maker who has limited mobility (he is a wheel chair user) for carving into spoons. The labour is divided in a very logical way.
