The many ways to use our hemp oil and pine tar hair and beard oil

Scalp – The treat hair growth and condition at source, treat the scalp! Using this oil also gives relief from dandruff, a dry scalp, itchiness and works directly on the hair follicles. Rub 1 teaspoon against the scalp. Leave it to absorb and work for at least 10 minutes, preferably 1 hour or overnight before washing out.

Please note the hair oil has a brown colour and may contain sediment from the ingredients,  so it is advised to lay a dark towel over your pillow case to avoid staining. Wash out with shampoo twice to remove traces.

Washing the oil out of the hair: We suggest using a liquid shampoo made by soaking soapnuts for the first wash as it is particularly good at degreasing the hair, following by a wash with rhassoul clay, or two washes with rhassoul clay, using the military wet and dry hair brush to work the clay along the shafts and roots of the hair more effectively than the hands alone. Follow with a natural hair condition such as our seaweed or marshmallow root hair conditioners.

Hair as a preconditioning wash treatment  – For most people who don't have any particular hair issues, or for those with dry and frizzy hair, using the hair oil prior to each hair wash, twice a week if you can, gives instant and prolonged results for improving the condition of the hair. It is not to say that it replaces our natural hair conditioner which as used straight after shampooing the hair. The hair benefits from both.  Apply 1 teaspoon of our hair oil to the scalp and comb down the hair. Leave in for at least 10 minutes, preferably an 1 hour or overnight before washing (twice as above)

Hair as a post wash treatment or for daily conditioning.

Pour the tiniest amount onto the palm of the hand and spread of the tines of a comb or over the bristles of the military hair brush. Brush into the hair, starting with the ends of the hair, then gently stroking along tresses of hair.

 More about the ingredients

Cannabis sativa seed oil
Cannabis sativa seed oil is the fixed oil expressed from the seeds of Cannabis sativa L., Cannabaceae. The oil has a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids. We are proud to source British hemp oil from a nearby farm, rather than Chinese grown hemp oil which is flooding our market. Hemp has been cultivated in Britain since at least the Bronze Age and needs no pesticides or herbicides. My part of the world, the Waveney Valley used to be the main hemp growing region in Britain supplying fibre for ropes and ship rigging. Nowadays production is heavily regulated, so much so, that farmers can only supply oil or fibre. The leaves or flowers are not allowed to leave the farm. It is a shame that much of the growth is wasted. I am hoping that by supporting the British hemp industry, the farmers might be empowered to change this situation. Please note, most of the hemp oil on the market is of Chinese production Yes, you have to dig deep to find this out!). Our hemp oil is British.

Pinus palustris wood tar
Pinus palustris wood tar (pine tar) is the product obtained by the destructive distillation of the wood of the Swamp Pine, Pinus palustris, Pinaceae. Unlike coal tar, wood tar and wood tar preparations contain minimal, if any, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fractions (genotoxic carcinogens.). Pine tar has been used across the ages in a variety of cosmetic products. It is also used in veterinary products for example to protect the navels of new born cattle and for treating cattle wounds, where upon healing, the fur grows back. I used to use it on my ponies when I was a child to treat superficial wounds. It would heal the wound quickly, keeping flies away during the process.

Ulva lactuca extract
Ulva lactuca extract is an extract of the Alga, Ulva lactuca, Cyperaceae. The common name is sea lettuce. This type of seaweed, sourced as organic seaweed from Ireland, is well know for promoting skin condition and hair growth and conditioning.

Rhassoul Clay
Known as a folk remedy in Morocco for keeping the hair, helping the delay male pattern baldness, rhassoul clay also helps with healthy hair growth and preventing hair loss. The Moroccan company which mines the rhassoul clay sells most of the production for cosmetic use as shampoo, where it is famed worldwide. Rhassoul clay is also a very versatile ingredient – imparting minerals and active clay particles to our finished hair oil.

Lavandula angustifolia flower oil
Lavandula angustifolia flower oil is the volatile oil obtained from the flowers of Lavandula angustifolia, Lamiaceae. Lavender is well know for promoting hair growth, speeding up hair growth, preventing thinning and bringing the hair into great condition.

Rosmarinus officinalis flower oil
Rosmarinus officinalis flower oil is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and fresh flowering tops of the Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis L., Lamiaceae. Again another tried and tested staple used in so many herbal hair products. Rosemary stimulates the circulation and promotes cellular regeneration.

Eugenia caryophyllus bud oil
Eugenia caryophyllus bud oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the dried flower buds of the Clove, Syzygium aromaticum, syn. Eugenia caryophyllus, Myrtaceae. Our essential all of cloves, not only adds a wonderful scent, but also helps to protect the scalp from pathogens which can contribute to hair loss. It also stimulates the hair producing follicles.

Common causes of hair loss
Hair is lost for a variety of reasons: Ageing, hormonal changes, stress, injury, infection, parasites, chronic or acute illnesses, nutritional imbalance, low thyroid or vitamin D, harm from ordinary shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes and other chemical treatments, chemo-therapy treatments, radiation treatments, reactions to medicines – with many more reasons. If you experience unexpected hair loss or alopecia, we suggest that you go to a doctor to establish the actual cause. Sometimes hair loss is a symptom of a serious disease.

Hair regrowth depends on many factors. First find the cause of your hair loss or thinning. Without addressing the cause, the hair loss will continue and you will not get the best results. If the follicles have been impaired for a long time, they can die completely. So expect results when the cause is address, if it can be addressed, but don't expect miracles.

My key advise to all customers suffering from hair loss and thinning is to stop using commercial 'foaming' shampoos and hair conditioners as they contain a cocktail of chemicals which damages the hair follicles and which damage the hair, causing weak hair and split ends. These chemical shampoos, are also bad to the environment and they are usually packed in plastic - of which less than 10% every actually gets recycled, the remaining 90% pollutes the planet. In my mind, typical shampoos have no virtues whatsoever.

Product Development

How did we develop this hair and beard oil? The answer is with the help rescue hedgehogs. As you know we sponsor and give active support a local hedgehog charity called Hog House, just around the corner from our warehouse. Do take a look at our Charity Page.

We provide natural products for the care of the hedgehogs, naturopathic health advice and occasional financial help. Many of the poorly hedgehogs arrive without fur or spines – they have been so ill, from stress, massive tick and flea infestations and parasites that both their furry undercoat and spines fall out. The hedgehogs are bought back to health in the rescue centre – but they can’t be released until they have a complete set of spines.

At the rescue centre, their carer, had been applying linseed oil to help new spines and fur re-emerge. However the oil would dry into a sticky paste at the bottom of the new spines and it would take hours to clean it off. The carers try to handle the rescue hogs as little as possible because they are wild animals and destined to be returned to the wild. Also cleaning dried oil off the spines was not only potentially stressful and uncomfortable for the wild hedgehogs, it was also very time consuming for the carers.

I invited the carer to try some pure hemp oil instead and she got good results, without the stickiness – After being left on the hedgehog for 20 minutes, the oil could be washed out completely with a rhassoul clay bath.

If you would like to continue reading this with before and after pictures of the 'spineless hedgehogs' and the amazing results, please see our illustrated blog page.

Many of these furless and spineless hedgehogs also had skin injuries, caused by borrowing ticks and flea bite allergies. I then made some hemp oil up with the addition of some pine tar, used so often in the past for superficial veterinary wound care. With a mixture containing both hemp oil and pine tar, results were achieved more quickly again and we were seeing the emergence of healthy skin, the new undercoat and spines in a week. We also felt that the hedgehogs would not mind the smoky, woodsy aroma of the pine tar because hedgehogs are not averse to hiding under bonfires.

Finally we created an oil which was more ‘activated’ with our organic, clay, seaweed; and more ‘medicated’ with essential oils to bring integrity to the skin more quickly. With our final formula, we found that fur and spine regrowth was visible within a few days!

So, no we don’t test on animals, but the hedgehogs have guided us in creating this powerful hair (and spine) growth formula. It has proven to be as safe and effective on these delicate animals as it is on us. The conclusion is that if our formula not only stimulates the growth of hair, but spines too, then it definitely works!

Thanks to the hedgehogs, we were able to develop a safe formula with proven results.

My own experience using the hair oil

Over the last year, I have joined the hedgehogs and been using the hemp and pine tar hair oil too. I apply it before each hair wash. When possible I leave it on overnight. I have noticed more hair growth especially around the edges of the hair line, less hair ending up in my comb, less frizz, and better condition for longer. I think overall, my hair is thicker now.

My current regime is to pre-oil the hair before washing it, to wash the hair using rhassoul clay as shampoo (and sometimes, soapnut liquid) using the military wet and dry hair brush to work the clay into the scalp and along the shafts of the hair.

For conditioner, I use our organic seaweed which is a great conditioner or sometimes a mixture of seaweed and marshmallow hair conditioner which gives the hair more body.

For daily combing – I always a horn comb as it brings my natural oils down the hair and removes far fewer hairs than a hair brush.

The hemp and pine tar hair oil is now a regular part of my routine.

I use henna too to cover the grey hairs and always make that with hot seaweed conditioner, meaning I loose very little hair through the hennaing process and get a deep conditioning treatment for several hours and when I come to rinse, the henna leaves the hair easily and quickly.

I don’t think any other hair regime is as complete, as natural or as effective. Please do have a look in our hair care department and discover everything for yourself. Do call us for advice if you need help.
